When the top ten hitmen face off in a last-man standing contest being bet on by some of the world's richest men, the only rule is to stay alive.

Assassins are ruthless and clever killers who get paid a lot of money to make problems go away. And pretty soon one of them is going to be a hundred million dollars richer if they can eliminate all the competition, before the competition eliminates them. But for retired hitman Johnny Dane, considered at one point to be the best hired killer in the world, getting out of the life doesn't necessarily mean getting out of the game.

Welcome to the world of high-priced hitmen and the game they've been thrust into. The last man (or woman) standing not only gets the prize but will be the only top notch assassin left available for hire. One of the top ten best killers has been notoriously absent from the contest, Johnny Dane. Having left the life, he's disappeared to an oceanfront hideaway and has vowed never to return, but when the game finds him and threatens the only woman he's ever loved, Dane realizes the only way out, is to get back in.

I was really enjoying this story until the end of chapter five. You can say whatever you want about me, but the fact that the little dog was killed in such a terrible way and how it was described that he ran up to his master concerned and cried when he was being killed is too much for me. I can handle graphic but I can't handle animals being hurt, real or not. So sadly, I will not be finishing this book, nor will I be reading anymore of Mark's books. I really enjoy his stories, but this was a line I will not cross. Just the picture in my head is upsetting. I hope everyone else is able to enjoy the rest of the story, but I can't.

I also don't understand anyone getting stuck on the whole "realism" thing here. Is it just me, are is most of our knowledge of assassins,in general, tainted by other fictional assassins? Hey, man, I'm no expert. But I found this highly entertaining...polished and professionally executed. Loved the pace. I thought the narration was pitch perfect...loved the delivery...and the story was captivating enough to buzz through it all at top speed. My only gripe is my own personal pet peeve; Could you just not leave the dog out of it?

one hell of a ride.. if you want entertainment few do it better than mark y. n. so subscribe:) Do not understand people bothering about the realism of the story..its just entertainment and not the killer´s manual.
