Marwan would have been one of our first 10 books, but the nature of it’s content caused me to hold off on listing the book until I had a chance to read — well, listen to — all of it. As the review says:
Some readers will be offended by the book, as it may seem to ask for empathy with its characters’ views and a sympathetic understanding of their actions. But I don’t think it has to be read that way. We can learn much from Schefrin’s novelistic speculations, which are grounded in firm and realistic insights into human nature.
You see, Marwan is a novel about the events leading up to 9/11 and told, in part, from the point of view of the terrorists. I don’t claim any moral superiority on the event, but I did want to make damn sure that we didn’t become “collateral damage” after the book was released should it contain and inflammatory claims. True to his words, Aram did a fine job of telling the story. Empathy — not sympathy — was invoked; a daunting task for such an atrocity that has had world-wide consequences.

Warning! Heavy geek talk that many of you will not care about contained in this post…
We’ve done a litle re-deployment to come of our code to make things a bit more palatable for some podcasting directories. To be specific, we changed our default RSS feed generation code so that it’ kicks out a consistent <pubDate>. We do some funky stuff with <pubDate>s for two reasons:
So while we didn’t compromise on the first issue, we did give ground on the second. Starting at the next refresh cycle, directories such as the Podcast.com, Podcast Pickle and others will now see all of our “default” feeds age. The upside is that our default feeds won’t draw the ire of directory developers and will now “behave” properly. The downside is that some of our content will now show as not updated in almost two years on directories. I already know of one directory that removes “stale” content1, so it’s only a matter of time before some well meaning directory admin deletes one of our books because it looks like it’s podfaded, when in actually it was just complete.
Pity, but I’m not sure what else we can do about it. I still think we need a universally accepted “completed” flag in the podosphere to designate content that should not expire, but we’re a niche within a niche and I’m not holding my breath.
At any rate, take a look at how our feeds appear in your directory of choice and keep me posted if anything funny happens.
1 - To my knowledge, no Podiobooks.com content was listed in this directory

We do some funky stuff with pubDates for two reasons: Personal: Our custom feeds are more about when you -- the listener -- are set to retrieve the next episode of a chapter, rather than when the episode was originally released by the author. Relevant: Podcast versions of audiobooks do not go stale like standard podcasts. In fact, there are a lot of other sorts of "timeless" content in the podosphere that get shafted when all the attention is on "new episodes". Skeptoid is a collection of skeptical factoids — short pro-science essays debunking a broad variety of phenomena in pop culture with pseudoscientific or paranormal foundations: Everything from wheatgrass juice, Bigfoot, alien abductions, and the Philadelphia Experiment to organic foods, the Amityville Horror, the Bible Code, and chemtrails. Skeptoid is supported by the popular podcast of the same name, hosted and produced by author Brian Dunning. Foreword by James ‘The Amazing’ Randi.
J.C. Hutchins, author of the successful “7th Son” podcast novel trilogy, has accepted a book deal to publish “7th Son: Descent,” the series’ debut novel. The thriller is scheduled for a 2009 U.S. spring/summer release by St. Martin’s Press.
“7th Son” is the story of seven strangers who have been brought together after the recent assassination of the U.S. president. The men discover that they are human clones, with identical childhood memories. These “John Michael Smiths” have been assembled to catch the man who murdered the president. Their target? Their progenitor, the original John Michael Smith, code-named “John Alpha.”
Hutchins is widely-known as one of the vanguard authors in a growing genre of free online audiobooks — also called “podcast novels ” or “podiobooks.” These novels are often read and recorded by the author, and are promoted online in podcasts and web blogs. “Podnovelists” like Hutchins leverage these new technologies — and the ubiquity of iPods and other portable devices — to find audiences for their work.
Hutchins, a South Florida resident, launched the audio version of “7th Son” in early 2006. Since then, “7th Son” has become the most successful podcast novel series in history. The trilogy has more than 30,000 listeners worldwide, and features cameos from sci-fi/horror icons Nathan Fillion, George Romero, Kevin J. Anderson, and others. In February 2007, the trilogy was featured in The New York Times.
“I’m thrilled to work with St. Martin’s Press in bringing ‘7th Son’ into the ‘real world,’ in real bookstores,” Hutchins said. “For the past two years, I’ve released the online audio version of ‘7th Son’ to an ever-growing, very enthusiastic fan base. I don’t know who’s going to be more excited to see it on bookshelves — my amazing, supportive listeners, or me.”
The online success of “7th Son” has brought Hutchins more than a worldwide audience. Hutchins is currently co-writing the debut novel in a new thriller novel series, which is slated for a 2009 release, also by St. Martin’s Press. Opportunities for “7th Son” are emerging in other media, as well.
Hutchins, who is affectionately chastised by his listeners for his cliffhanger-style chapter endings, remains coy about the other projects.
“There’s lots to talk about,” Hutchins said, smiling. “But as in ‘7th Son,’ timing and pacing is everything. I guess folks will have to keep listening to learn more.”

I found the interface to be very friendly — for you the bookmarker and for the social bookmarking sites. No spam. Several sites require that you have an account, and almost all of them require some sort of customization. So while it’s not a “one click and you are done” solution, it should provide for a much better end-user result when the sites list the links.
So start bookmarking, people! The image to the left shows what it looks like. You’ll find it just below the book cover image on any book’s page. Link away!

Myke Bartlett’s mystery tale, Electricity, finished up when he provided us the last episode on Halloween… and we forgot to tell you about it.
So sorry for the delay, and thanks to Myke for giving us another great book!

A few days ago, Facebook announced that they would allow brands to create their own profile pages. Being a mixture of social media butterfly and cynical bastard, I set up a profile page for Podiobooks.com and told a few of my friends. They told their friends who in turn told their friends, and we’re already at more than 100 people who’ve friended our profile. It’s been up for a couple of days, and I can already see how I can capitalize on this opportunity and spread the word of Podiobooks.com far and wide.
But like any social media application, it doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and it sure helps if you can get your ‘friends’ to help out. And so I turn to the 1300 or so folks who are subscribe to this feed. Got a Facebook profile? Then show us a little love by adding us as a friend. It’s a bit clunky in that you have to select “add to Products” which is rather counter-intuitive.
While you are there, consider posting something on our wall, or giving us a review. I’ll be using Facebook to communicate a few things that are best communicated in that environment, and not here on the blog or on Twitter. Ah… one more social media profile to keep oiled and polished. It’s a good thing I need little sleep!

This book is a practical, engaging and altogether indispensable career companion. After reading this book you will learn what to do before, during, and after the interview to ensure you’re success!
I’m a rather green person, though there is lots of room for personal growth in that area. I drive a hybrid, recycle, and generally support just about any initiative which will lower my ecological footprint. And I just found out in Steve Rubel’s Simple Ways to Go “Media Green” post that Podiobooks.com is doing it’s part to help, too!
Like lots of people I have become more aware of what I can and should be doing to help the environment. (Thanks, Al.) Now I am taking this to the next level by getting toward what I call a “Media Green” state. Basically, I am converting all the media I consume (and there is a lot of it) into the most environmentally friendly format I can find, without sacrificing too much of the experience.
Steve goes on to mention that his first step was to stop reading printed books in favor of audiobooks. He give several good reasons to make this jump:
Now that MP3 players are ubiquitous - and cheap - [the] selection [at iTunes and Audible] has grown a lot over the years.
Yes it has. And it’s also caused many underpublished authors, or those authors who are looking for alternate methods of distributing their work, to take advantage of this ubiquity by releasing their own audio books in serialized format totally free of charge. I can think of 160 examples…
For starters, I love that I can carry several audiobooks with me at once. Try that with bound books. You’ll break your back. I keep two or three at all times lined up on my iPhone ready to go.
Very true. And some extremely busy people have discovered that “just in time” delivery of episodes is actually better — for them — than having to figure out where they left off of an entire audiobook. Consuming the book in serialized form reduces this confusion, and makes it easy — for some — to listen to more than one book during the day or week.
they actually cost less over time than hard copy books. I wish publishers made all of their titles available in audio format.
But the books you get from Podiobooks.com are a whole lot cheaper than hard copy books — as in FREE! And yeah, I wish all titles were available in audio format too, Steve. But I’m happy to say that many authors are starting to realize that they have the power — and skill — to release audio versions on their own. Hooray for the forward thinkers!
