Now releasing The Demon Queen and The Locksmith by Spencer Baum

Spencer Baum returns to the site, this time with a Young Adult title. Please enjoy The Demon Queen and The Locksmith:

“Ordinary teens become extraordinary in this thrilling tale of good versus evil…Skillfully written, this novel will captivate teens, including reluctant readers.” — Publishers Weekly.

The Demon Queen and The Locksmith is a 2010 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Semifinalist.

Kevin panicked when his ears began to buzz. He couldn’t be a Hearer. The Hearers were the town freaks. Worse, his dad was one of them, and Kevin’s greatest fear was that one day he might turn into his father.

In Turquoise, New Mexico, some people believe that the mountain north of town emits a constant, resonant hum that is audible only to a chosen few. They are called Hearers, and fourteen-year-old Kevin Brown has never trusted them. But when a carefree afternoon with his friends comes to a surprise finish at the spot where Kevin spread his mother’s ashes only a year before, a place where the open air seems to resonate in kevin’s ears, he realizes he might be a Hearer too, and “The Turquoise Hum” might be much more than a sound.

    This is great!
Is this all there is going to be on Podiobooks of this title? Or will it stop here as it says in the outro to Chapter Six?
If it is just a teaser, I think Podiobooks has the duty to let us know this before we begin listening to the episodes.
    What say you, Evo?

  3. Spencer Baum Says:

    Hi Mary Laura!

The whole thing will be released on Podiobooks (I’m editing the next episode as we speak). The files on Podiobooks are complete and there is no warning of a stop on the outro. I think I’ve caused confusion because an old sampler of the book is up on iTunes, and the Podiobooks feed hasn’t shown up on iTunes yet. I’ll get after that old iTunes release to make sure no one else is running into the same problem.

I’m glad you’re enjoying the book so far!

Very pleased to see this one added. I purchased the book sometime last year and both my wife and I really liked it.

Finished the book and I give it three and a half stars. The Pros: I thought the mythology created within the story was interesting, the jumping of perspectives and the system of “magic” used. For most part the triller and fantasy portions were interwoven well, were fun as they unfolded and inviting enough that it left you thinking after it was all said and done. The Cons: I thought the pacing was a poor, the characters, besides Kevin and the “villain,” won’t say who because I don’t want to give it away, lacked depth and the ending was weak. The real action sequences where the “good guys” could and should fight back was a big let down. I felt the resolution was sort of a cop out as the “battle” between the demons was there and ready to roll. That is my major complaint. However, this story is very much worth the read especially if there is the possibility that further stories in this universe will be done. Thanks Mr. Braum I enjoyed it.

Well done. Unlike the previous guy, I enjoyed all of the book. The only issue I had was the butterflies, That was a stretch. Otherwise, well done.

  7. TJGeezer Says:

Looking forward to listening to this with my grandson, who is visiting over the Xmas-New Year holiday.

  8. Spencer Says:

Thanks everyone for the comments so far, and for listening!

  9. Chris Says:

An enjoyable listen and great for young adults. The author definitely could have done more to add excitement and make it more of a thriller, but it was still a good listen and I’m hoping there will be a sequel.

I loved this story, it took me back to childhood. I loved the setting as well, the descriptions of nature were beautiful. The plot was exciting and the characters were fully drawn. This would be perfect reading for kids! I hope Mr. Baum contributes more stories to Podiobooks.
