Freak City
Remember two days ago when I talked about Tom Lichtenberg? I get to do it again, because we’re putting live another complete short novel of his. Freak City is now live:
It’s hard to control your destiny while you’re waiting for the bus. The trouble for Argus Kirkham began when a stranger pushed his way through a crowd at a bus stop and pressed a package into his hands. Inside the package were various random items – photos and toys and newspaper clippings. None of it seemed to make any sense, but as Argus and his friends unraveled the clues, very strange things began to occur in this novel of mystery and ghosts.
It’s complete, so the choice is yours: a custom feed that spaces out the five episodes over time, or the default feed that has them all available now.

What an excellent story, really enjoyed it. Also, I kinda understood Argus, I got where he was coming from.

Having listened to “Secret Sidewalk”, I was primed for Tom Lichtenberg’s brand of odd and in “Freak City” he did not disappoint. This story is like a Picasso, or a Mondrian, attempting to show how things really are, not merely as they seem. That being so, your mileage may vary. For this reader it was fantastic and exceptional.
As a progression from the earlier work, “Secret Sidewalk,” this story held together better. The underpinnings were more grounded in a mundane reality, making the extraordinary bits, and the concepts for which they are manifestations, more vibrant. Things didn’t just pop out at you for no reason as can happen in fantastical fiction. This world is as solid as the chair you are sitting in, but shot through with aforementioned Lichtenberg brand of odd.
The whole story is very tight and is enhanced, rather than hindered by being short. Really nice job all around once again for Tom, whose work just keeps getting better. Listen to this and let your world be just a little more colorful… and odd.
