Tumbler

Welcome Brand Gamblin to the site. Today he’s starting the release of his family-friendly scifi tale, Tumbler:

Libby Carter wanted to get away from it all, so she took a job mining asteroids as far out into the inky blackness as possible. However, her escape turned into a trap, leaving her stuck in indentured servitude, living on a tiny rock in space. As she tries to dig herself out, she gains friends and finds adventure. Cave-in rescues, planetary collisions, and other mishaps keep her new family fighting to stay alive.

We’re starting with the normal five episodes in the default feed. And of course, a custom feed will give you those one at a time, plus give you all the future episodes one at a time. Either way, it’s another free audiobook!

    Good Work.
Episode 1 didn’t really grab me. The writing was average and the reading was stilted. Boy am I glad I hung on! This has gotten better and better! The reading is much more engaging and the writing is both technically believable and exciting. Great work, both of you! Just listened to 4 & 5 and looking forward to the next installments.

    Cheers!

    Barry

  2. Brand Gamblin Says:

Thanks Barry! I know, the story is a little slow to start. Sorry about that, I’m still working on it in revision. Glad you’re liking the latest stuff, though. I think we are getting better as we learn more about the process.

    Thanks again!

  3. Alice Says:

Any news about when we can expect an update on the perils of Libby? BTW great book, well read.

  4. Brand Gamblin Says:

Alice, funny you should ask. We just submitted episode 12 (the final episode) to Podiobooks, and it should be coming up in the next day or so.

  5. Gordy Says:

    Will there be another book?

  6. Brand Gamblin Says:

Gordy, at the moment, I’m working on a completely different book (a steampunk retelling of George Orwell’s classic, titled “1884″). Once that is done, I’m going to podcast it.

As for a sequel to Tumbler, I don’t know. The last episode leaves Libby in an entirely new life, so any sequel would have to be very different. That said, I think it could be done, and could show how much larger her universe has become.

    Thanks for listening!

A retelling of 1984? That would be groovy. Could you please also make it less suicidal-tendrencies-provoking than the original? After all, manyu of us listen to while driving a car, you wouldn’t want anyone to purposely veer into oncoming traffic, would you?

  8. Dubba Says:

While I do agree that the story was slow to start, by the end of the book I found the writing had begun to flow into a podiobook format.

The storyline had some nice points. I teared up twice out of pride for the characters. Some of the plot was predictable from early on in the story, but presented well enough.

Overall I give it a A for a good listen, but I am not sure it is up to publishing strength yet. Keep up the good work.

  9. Brand Gamblin Says:

Marco, I’ll admit that the beginning of the story is pretty bleak, in this version I have a lot more action/adventure steampunk stuff in there, so I don’t think it’s quite as sad. But I’ll let you guys be the judge when I finish it. :)

  10. Brand Gamblin Says:

Dubba, Thanks for listening, and for that review. Glad to know the tear-jerker parts got you at a couple of points. :)

Tumbler is a great story and I hope you add to the story as I would love to hear more about Libby and how her life changes.
The narrating was very good and with Podiobooks the story can be good and if the narration is flat it will turn me off great combination.

    I can’t wait for book 2

    Jim

  12. Brand Gamblin Says:

    James,

Thanks! I’m glad you liked the story, and I know SVAllie will be glad to hear you liked the narration.

Book 2? I just need to finish a few other projects, and then I’m right there with you.

    Thanks again.

Just bought the Ebook, thanks to J.C. Hutchins. However,in doing so, also saw a podiobook (I really need to come here more often…)

I really enjoyed the story. Perhaps a bit slow to start, or at least, the beginning could have been done to greater effect. For instance, a bit more of a peek into what motivates Libby’s need for such autonomy and self-reliance to the exclusion of community would be interesting. The end felt a bit rushed, too, and for the same sort of character back story kinds of reasons. Great start, though, and there’s really lots of room here to really flesh this out quite a lot. Count me a new fan and eager to see what else comes (not just from the last tumbler).

  14. Brand Gamblin Says:

    Buddy,

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I’ve been working on it a lot in preparation for the print version, and you may enjoy the new beginning more. Still, I think you’re right about her motivations being somewhat opaque. I had it clear in my mind, but perhaps I could illustrate it better in the story.

    Thanks again!

  15. genevere Says:

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. Characterisations and the plot are well done.

  16. Liam Says:

I hardly ever read books because I just fail to engage with them. I loved this audio book. It was just brilliant. I’m not very technical when it comes to literature and it’s nearly impossible to find a book that I like. This was very very enjoyable and the narrator has a lovely voice. I will listen to more of these for sure

  17. Brand Gamblin Says:

    @Liam
Thank you very much for that review. It’s really great to hear that people are still finding and enjoying Tumbler. I’m hoping to have my next story “1884″ up online soon.

While also a fan of Heinlein I can see the influences & where the author differs. The story works, though, & I thoroughly enjoyed it.
