I think the reason things like OGG have never caught on is because of the confusion about containers. I personally don't understand the difference between a file like an .mpg or .mp3 and something like what .avi and .ogg claim to be - "container" formats. Apple, for example, doesn't say it's iPods play .ogg files so almost no casual user is going to use them even if they were available - and despite arguements over the Apple brand and the quality of other choices the iPod is the most popular player. iTunes now sells .m4a files encoded with ACC. They are higher quality than .mp3s now.

Good point, Zeus. But as you state, the market didn't go the OGG route.

I prefer the OGG format since it isn't hampered by patents and device manufacturers don't have to license it, unlike the MP3 format (which was on its way out the door a decade ago before the masses glommed onto it).

[...] iTunes isn’t the only game on the internets. Anyone know this thing called a Zune? Popularity jokes aside, other music stores out there still carry the DRM shackle with them. Just because the biggest of the bunch doesn’t do it doesn’t mean others do. Big audiobook user? Your rights aren’t going anywhere for awhile. [...]
