Synthetic Marmalade

Short and sweet. That’s a pretty good way to describe Mike Luoma’s new listing — Synthetic Marmalade.

Poems, Song Lyrics and Magic Spells written by Mike Luoma over the past 20 years. Luoma’s poems and lyrics range from idylls on Vermont (“The Monkton Road”) to songs the Boss might like (“Cars & Girls #342″)to spell-like ritual poetry (“Ceremonies of Light and Dark”), and all points in between. The poems and spells are recited, the lyrics are sung accompanied by a guitar, recorded straight to two-track with some overdubs. The content is presented in a different order from the print book so that songs and poems could be mixed together. Special guest Sean Kelly of the Samples helped record “Sonny’s Got A Gun” and plays on the track.

As you can see, this is a bit different from Mike’s Vatican Assassin trilogy that you may be already familiar with. Either way, this short collection is now available. You pick if you want a default feed or a custom feed. Your choice!

Yup, this is different all right. Kind of an experiment. I decided to sing the song lyrics from the book, because that’s what felt right to me. Decided to mix up the contents from the printed page to the audiobook, too. I wanted to kind of alternate songs and poems for the audiobook.

I played and recorded the songs straight to 2 tracks, so it’s mostly live, with some overdubs. Especially in the Love section. Don’t know why, but I felt compelled to layer the vocals on some of those.

Give it a try. Give it a listen. And let me know what you think. It’s either a grand experiment or a big pile of doo-doo!

Free Contest, New Column & New Page of Panthea Obscura from Mike Luoma

My new column on creating comic books is up today at Cosmic Book News! Hope you can join me for this seventh installment. I’ll tell you about finishing up the second issue of Panthea Obscura with artist Juan Carlos Quattordio, relate my first con experience as a panelist, and…

There’s also a FREE CONTEST exclusively for the readers of my column, where you could win a signed copy of a rare comic book! When I was writing the column, I realized I still had one copy on the shelf of a special PREVIEW edition of Panthea Obscura Issue Two that I’d put together for my appearance at 2Pi-Con. This preview has the first half of the issue completely finished and lettered, with the second half showing the work in progress – some pages are colored but without letters, some pages are inked, some are half inks and pencils, the last page is just the rough pencils. Only five of these issues were ever printed. I’ll sign this one to the winner to make it a one-of-a-kind rarity. The column is here:

AND Panthea Obscura continues page by page FREE on the web! We’re up to page 10 of issue four – almost halfway through the book. The “gods” have taken the battle to their brother Troy, the Destroyer, in Hades! The Deep lets loose with his trident, shaking the foundations of the underworld with his mighty water control and earthquakes, surprising Troy! Read it here:

I was tipped off to a great site for ebooks: Smashwords: http://www.smashwords.com

As a writer, I upload my books to Smashwords and their software, known affectionately as the “Meatgrinder”, takes the original document and converts it into several different formats. Smashwords then makes the ebooks available for sale using PayPal. As the author, I can set a price for my book, allow the reader to pay what they feel like, or offer it for free. As Smashwords says on their website, they offer “…multi-format, DRM-free ebooks, ready for immediate sampling and purchase, and readable on any e-reading device.”

Decided to try it out! I’ve uploaded all three books in the “Vatican Assassin Trilogy”: Vatican Assassin, Vatican Ambassador and Vatican Abdicator, as well as my collection of poems, lyrics and spells, Synthetic Marmalade, and my book on Gnosticism and early Christianity, NEO-GNOSIS. I’ve set all five books to allow the reader to pay whatever they like for them. You’ll find them here at my Smashwords profile page: http://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/mikeluoma .

There’s also a link on my site, so you can just head over to http://glowinthedarkradio.com and go from there if you like.

I’m happy to see Podiobooks.com team up with Smashwords.com – I’ve had my books available through Smashwords ever since I was turned onto their site a couple months ago. Their “meatgrinder” is especially impressive!

I also like that Smashwords lets me offer you the e-books for the price you choose to pay… for free, or for what you feel they’re worth. I’m still proving myself as a writer, so I’d rather you checked out what I’m writing than charge you for something you don’t connect with. If you like it, you can always buy another copy… just saying! Actually, people have been good, a lot of free downloads at Smashwords, but a lot of people paying between 1 to 3 bucks a book. The print copies are still selling and that’s awesome, too – thanks to everyone who’s picked up my books in paperback!

But I digress… this is a cool partnership!

My latest endeavor is a convergence of my worlds!

My comic book short “Alibi Jones: Blind Eye” is now an audiobook short story! I’ve adapted the script from the comic as an audio short, and it’s free to listen to as part of my new Glow-in-the-Dark Radio Podcast:

    http://glowinthedarkradio.podomatic.com/entry/2011-03-05T10_13_04-08_00

It’s 2135 – Alibi is in the SAIF (Solar Alliance Interplanetary Force) Mediation Corps. He handles negotiations between humanity and alien races, and occasionally oversees negotiations between alien races. He’s the adopted son of the former head of the Solar Alliance, Anita Capituna, his “Aunt Anita”.

At a diplomatic function he attends on his aunt’s behalf, Alibi hears talk of people buying into a new settlement. But the news sounds suspicious – could “Poyas” be more con job than colony? And what is Alibi’s old girlfriend Shirra doing messed up in it?

Read preview pages & find out more at http://alibijones.com. And as always there are more of my books & lots of free downloads at my website: http://glowinthedarkradio.com.
