A new author joins us today. Welcome to Emerian Rich and his her briefly-described horror/dark fantasy tale Night’s Knights:

How can one mistake Emerian Rich for a man?

  2. Evo Says:

It’s about as easy as those who mistake me for a woman.

My bad. All over the fix now.

  3. Kirk Warrington Says:

This is a fantastic podcast. I am really enjoying it.

I love how you brought the characters to life. Jespa, Danny, Martin, Severina and Julien really stand out. Your voices for each character are also well done as is narration.

The subtle sound effects also add one more dimension to the podcast but don’t overwhelm the narration.

I’m not especially interested in vampire genre but you have won me over with this podcast novel. Great job!

  4. MaitreDee Says:

Possibly the new Anne Rice. Great pod-novel, interesting characters, original story line, looking forward to more from Emerian.

  5. arielwintre Says:

Excellent podiocast..love the story great to see a strong female character. Great vampire story.

  6. edie Says:

    This is horrid. Terrible.
Voices are so stilted – the male voice can hardly ennuciate!
Is it produced by kids? I couldn’t stand to listen. YUCK.
I love vamp stories and couldn’t get past the narration.

  7. Nia Says:

Edie be nice. While the narrator sounds younger than most of the authors on here she’s doing a very good job with the audio and narration. Sure, there is room for improvement, but who doesn’t have that with their first few episodes or ‘casts?

The story is a little slow to pick up but it seems to be getting up to speed. The story warms up after a few episodes and the narration smooths out.

  8. TruckerRich Says:

Love the story, characters and the narration great. Some people don’t realize how hard it is to do all three. Keep up the awesome job. You Rock Girl!!!!!!

  9. Red Says:

I love this story, the way its weaved together over time. The characters are all so individual which is great. Emerian is so awesome.

  10. Lobster Says:

The narrator’s voice takes some getting used to.

  11. voodookiss69 Says:

I LOVE this story. It carries you from one tale to another, keeping your mind engaged while giving you a picturesque description so you can visualize it for yourself. The characters are so complicated and different from one another- it just adds to whole story line. Great job- keep ‘em coming!

  12. Sunshine Says:

I’m really trying hard to get into the story, but the writing is just not that good. It really makes me wonder how many of the commentors above are friends of the author’s!

The narrator’s voice is out and out awful. I’m having a hard time listening. And her filtered/disguised voice as the male characters is beyond horrible. If it is truly a man doing this, then he needs to take a course on reading out loud. The dialogue is stilted, there are weird breaks in the reading and it doesn’t flow at all. And the way that comes across makes me think the author envisioned every male character as stupid or uneducated. And I certainly hope that’s just bad reading on someone’s part; not the author’s position.

I do have to admit to being weary of the way that all of the younger female characters constantly degrade men (”assholes,” “bastards,” etc.). It is just beyond asinine and grade schoolish (and I’m a woman for the record).

Overall, the language choices and similies are really childish as well. I’m not trying to bash the author and I truly hope she takes some of this into consideration. I think a few good writing courses would help her as well as finding someone else to do the podcasts. The voices really really distract from the writing.

im not normally one for all the stereotypical vampires. I normally read the ones like Twilight (where vampires can walk out into the sun and they sparkle) and the House of Night Series (Dont have to be bitten to become a vampire, etc.) But this podnovel has me hooked! All the characters have different and kick ass personalities. Its just so amazing!
Emerian, you are one awesome writer. I shall look to your writing for an example of how to write for myself.

I’ve listened to 35 chapters straight through during a long drive, and yes, some of the earlier chapters were a bit rough, but I have to tell you, the more I listened the more I got into the story. The author shows a great deal of attention to detail and every character is a complete individual. No cookie cutter characters here. The jumps between the present and the past, the storylines showing how the different characters became who they were and how they changed into who they are now, and why they are that way, is intriguing and entertaining. Frankly, I love this book. It’s a lot of fun, and I’ve had good comments from the people I have lead towards it.

  15. Colin Barnes Says:

Emerian Rich has created an intriguing and gripping story. And most importantly it’s fun. I enjoy the characters and their interactions and think that Emerian has done a good job with the writing. Keep up the great work. Colin.

  16. Mike Bennett Says:

This is more than a well-written book, it’s a great audio-drama. Emerian Rich does a marvellous job of bringing the podcast to life with a vast and wonderful range of sound effects and atmospheric music. It’s a very entertaining podiobook experience.

  17. jtd0827 Says:

The voices take some getting used to, but I LOVE the fact that you post several chapters at once and you’re very good at posting regularly. There are other podiobooks that I am hooked on but there is no schedule for postings and they will go several weeks between postings and it can make it hard to get back into between chapters. With others, I have to listen to the chapter before (again) before listening to the latest chapter just so I know that I am following the story line like before.

    Keep up the great work!!!!

  18. Ross Says:

There appears to be something wrong with episode 37; I can barely hear the voices.

  19. Emerian Rich Says:

Thanks Ross for letting me know! Yes, it sounds like alien chipmunks took over my feed. I will re-load this episode ASAP. Sorry about the inconvenience. Thanks for listening. :)

  20. Jerry Says:

Episode 35 seems to have issues as well.

  21. Emerian Rich Says:

Thank you all for the emails and comments about the feed. For some reason some chapters above 30 are not working properly. Sorry about the inconvenience. Podiobooks is working on the issue and it should be resolved soon. If you have any questions or continue to have problems, please feel free to email me at: emzbox@sbcglobal.net

  22. Emerian Rich Says:

Sounds like the problem has been resolved. Thanks Evo for your help on this. If you have any questions or continue to have problems, please feel free to email me at: emzbox@sbcglobal.net
    Happy listening! :)

  23. Evo Says:

Actually, if you have problems, the best thing to do is use the REPORT A PROBLEM WITH AN EPISODE link here on the blog, or the REPORT A PROBLEM link on the bottom of the book’s page.

When you use these links, several of us at Podiobooks.com are notified. When you email Emz, she then emails me, and then I lose the email and…

You see the problem. Use the links. Gets problems fixed quicker. :)

  24. Chris Says:

Love a good vampire story and this one is great cause the vampires all have character, I mean when have you ever seen a cowboy vampire!

  25. Karen Says:

I was not a big fan of this podiobook. Mistake #1, the author should recognize her own weakness and that is her voice. Trying to sell your own work is hard enough, but in this medium it sure helps to have a nice voice and Emerian does not and it distracts from the work. The music was also a poor choice and did not do its job to create mood or segway into the next scene. I was disppointed with the ending and thought she sold out.

  26. bayushi Says:

I enjoy listening the story. I like Sevrina accent. I was shocked I found out that Emerian Rich records all voices, male and female. Amazing. And I like the title ;)

  27. spider Says:

    oh my god.

    this book is for teenagers.

    and not smart teenagers.

my tip to the author: major rewrite, and make it into an audiodrama…y’know, with cast members…ones with actual voice talent?

  28. Kirk Warrington Says:

The author podcasted this novel as a straight read and only added some flair to the voices to help listeners tell the difference between the characters. If you want a podcast with a full cast of people doing it, then please look up audiodrama. (*That drunk in the beginning of the podcast – you’re not supposed to understand what they say as Jespa does not understand it.*) I found the novel, podcast, and the characters engaging and fun.

  29. mentis Says:

I like the author’s voice and have really enjoyed the many voices the author has done (yes, most seem to be done with editing software, but the time and effort involved is staggering). Good job!

I am not particularly a vampire or horror genre fan, but I did find the story interesting.

As someone who abandons three-quarters of audio novels within the first few chapters, it is essential that you listen through episode 3 before deciding to continue with the story or not.

  30. Hooked Says:

Night’s Knights by Emerian Rich Horror/Dark Fantasy Great entertainment and allot of fun to listen to. I like the author’s voice and have really enjoyed the many voices the author has done. Good job! She just has a very special voice that takes getting use to. I have only listened to a few vampire books. I would put this one on the top of my list. I did not expect the novel to go where it did. I’m glad the author didn’t go to the evil vampire that either just kills to kills or the vampire hunter. The story line was very well written. Love the plot line with all the different characters all the way to the end and can’t wait for the next book!

  31. bex Says:

I LOVED this podiobook….can’t wait for the sequel! Great job, can’t wait to here more.Cheers!

  32. Jennifer Says:

I cannot say that this podiobook was one of my favorites. I got used to the voices, but still found them not really enjoyable to listen to. I certainly would not equate this author with Anne Rice, but I would not cast this story into the worst list of things I have heard in the podio world. It is somewhere in the middle. The story ending was a bit rushed sounding to me with the major epic battle and seemed to be solved a bit too easily, but that is my opinion. all the characters could be told apart, but some of the voices were grating on the ears, especially the male voices. I do not know that I would listen to anything else by this author.

  33. genevere Says:

I really enjoyed this book. The story was engaging and I was eager to hear what came next. The plotting was great – I appreciated the various deviations into the past that explained what people did in the present. The characters were believable and well fleshed out and not un-naturally “good” or “evil”. I eagerly await what comes next. Thank you.

  34. Arlene Radasky Says:

When we read or hear about vampires we often don’t know what caused the original person to become a vampire. We just read or hear about the gore and grief that is caused by vampires. But in Emerian Rich’s Night’s Knights, it is all explained. Emerian has a turn on the story we all know, an original step away from the myths and legends we know, into a world completely unexpected yet welcome.

I suggest you listen Night’s Knights and meet Jespa, the heroine who undergoes a complete transformation from a tough street girl, to…. No You are going to have to read it. Become completely engrossed in each character and care about their end. And find out why it has the intriguing title of Night’s Knight’s.

This book left me smiling at the end and wondering where Emerian’s story telling will take us next.

Yes, her voices take a few chapters to get used to however, the story kept me coming back.
