Podiobook author wins $10,000 humor award
Just over a month ago, we told you that Terry Fallis’ book The Best Laid Plans (of course, it’s available here as a serialized free audiobook) was shortlisted for the 2008 Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. This is a Very Big Deal in Canadian literary circles, as Terry was suddenly thrust up against some heavy hitters in the field.
Shortlist, smortlist. Terry won the award!
Canada’s premier newspaper, The Globe and Mail, said:
A debut novel, self-published by its author after he couldn’t interest an agent or a Canadian publisher, has won the $10,000 2008 Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour.
Fallis beat four other finalists, all of whose books were released last year by “official” publishers. The books were Douglas Coupland’s The Gum Thief (Random House), Spanish Fly by two-time Leacock winner Will Ferguson (Penguin), Scott Gardiner’s King John of Canada (McClelland & Stewart) and Ron Wood’s And God Created Manyberries (Frontenac House).
So… do you like apples? Well how do you like them apples? Go Terry! And go everyone else who’s had gatekeepers say “thanks, but no thanks”. I’m going to be bouncing around with a smile on my face for days.
