Today we launch another family friendly fantasy tale. This is Origin Scroll, by Richard S. Tuttle:
The world is in peril. The Evil sorcerer, Sarac, seeks an ancient document entitled, the Origin Scroll. This ancient tome contains the knowledge to control the very existence of the Universes. Sarac will stop at nothing to obtain the Origin Scroll and the fate of the Universes rest with three unknown children. Alexander Tork, a fifteen-year-old boy, is an apprentice lumberman learning the trade from his father in a small nameless village in the frontier region of Targa. Oscar Dalek, a fifteen-year-old boy, lives with his widowed mother in a town on the Targa-Cordonia border. The family’s survival rests with the boy’s abilities to salvage whatever he can from the caravans crossing the border. Jenneva Roth, a fifteen-year-old girl who loves to read, lives with her aged uncle in western Targa. Unfortunately, her uncle’s health is failing and she must travel across the country to live with relatives she has never seen.
Origin Scroll by Richard S. Tuttle is a fantasy novel about three formerly insignificant young people who will meet and unite their special abilities to challenge the evil sorcerer, Sarac, before he destroys the Universes. Origin Scroll is the first volume of the Targa Trilogy. Dark Quest and Ancient Prophecy complete the Targa Trilogy.

I love your book, your narration is wonderful and your story is very compelling. I have to tell you though I wouldn’t have read it if my dad hadn’t told me it was good. You may want to re-think your teaser. Maybe something like:
“Alexander Tork is an apprentice lumberman, a fifteen year old who is forced to take the lead when his village is attacked by a pack of vicious beasts. But darker things lurk in the lands of Targa and Cordonia, an evil questing for an artifact that will shake the very Universe. Alex, and two more unknown youths, Oscar and Jenneva, are the only ones who can prevent the end of their universe…they just don’t know it yet.”

Nia, thank you for your kind words, and convey my appreciation to your father for his recommendation. It is recommendations like his that make books successful.
Teasers have always been a challenge for me. I change them from time to time, but it is hard for me to gauge their effectiveness. Input from readers like you is most helpful in letting me know if I am hitting the mark.

I loved your book thus far. I have to say that it is truly the best book I have come across in a long time. The story is anything but simple. I am eager for the remaining chapters (please hurry). Will you be putting the other two books of the series on podiobooks.com?

Larry, thank you for the compliment. I am planning on recording Dark Quest in early summer (July time frame), but my schedule is always tentative. I am currently writing the next volume of the Demonstone Chronicles (sixteenth book of the Alcea Collection), and that takes priority over everything else. Once that book is on the market, I will turn my attention to Dark Quest and get it ready for podiobooks.
Recording of Ancient Prophecy is too far out to actually be on the schedule, but as long as podiobooks fans like what they are hearing, I will keep posting chapters.

A rich world, well done. If you’re getting back into recording again my only suggestion for the next book is to listen to episode 16 again and listen to how much music there is. I think its distracting, but that’s my only quibble, so you can see how much I liked it. Liked your voice and your timing. I’ve always wanted to like fantasy books, but too often, the cliches overpower the imagination of the author. I think it was fresh.
I hope many people contribute, so that it is worth your time to keep going through the saga.

Richard, this is a wonderful story! My kids loved it. Who said podcasting doesn’t work? Immediately after finishing the Origin Scroll, my youngsters demanded that I find the book online and order them. Thanks for making something we could listen to as a family in the minivan.

I originally wrote Origin Scroll, Dark Quest, and Ancient Prophecy in 1997 for my own kids. I never imagined that would be the start of a new career. Quandmeme – Thank you for your kinds words. Chapter 16 of Origin Scroll is a rare chapter with lots of scene breaks as I tried to portray the different segments of the battle as they were happening. In my twenty-four books since I have never had another chapter with so many scene breaks. The music, of course, denotes a scene break as the visual indication normally used is not available to the listener. As for the contributions, that would be nice, but I am happy enough that readers like the story enough to rate it highly. It is the ratings that will keep me recording for podiobooks.com.
Chris – Dark Quest is scheduled to be recorded some time this summer, but admittedly, it is a low priority. New writings get the bulk of my time. I expect to be done with volume six of the Demonstone Chronicles by (hopefully) the end of July. After that is published I will take up the recording of Dark Quest. Alex, Jenneva, and Oscar will be back! Stay tuned!

Excellent book. Quality just as good as the professionally done/commercial audio books I get from my district library, and Audioble.com. I visited Richard Tutlle’s website and corresponded with him after listening to this book encouraging him to make more of his books available in audio format.
This month (October 2008) he released Dark Quest on Podibooks.com. Can’t wait till its finished to start listening (I don’t start listening until after it is complete and it gets added to my book queque).

Dwight, thank you for your comments. You certainly did try to encourage me to get more of my books converted to audio, and I am happy to let you know that your words have swayed me.
I have pushed off writing the next book in my current series to devote some time to recording my books. I will convert as many of them as possible between now and the end of the year.
