Nawashi

Graydancer makes his debut on Podiobooks.com with his tale of magical realism dusted with a bit of erotica, Nawashi:

Nawashi is an erotic urban fantasy, the story of a man who discovers that underneath the world of kink and BDSM lies a global conflict of magical forces. Drawn into it, he struggles to develop his own powers and skill to protect his family from the forces which now consider him a threat.

    Nawashi….

    Hmmmmmmm…….

    Graydancer disgusts me…

At first listen I was taken by how easy it was to just settle in & listen to the story. Many times it is only an author who is able to really get across the emotions & inflections of the characters because they created them but in this case it goes much further than that. Graydancer is Brian & Brian is Graydancer, it’s just that simple. During my first “readthru” of chapter one I was not only listening to a narrative of the main character of Brian but it felt like I was sitting with a good friend listening to his exploits of the night before. I didn’t get the sense that I needed to “suspend belief” as is needed in many bdsm oriented tales but to just follow along with a great storytellers tale.

Now yes, I have to admit that I personally know Graydancer & this is only one of the reasons I can just sit back & listen to him spin his yarn but if you have any idea of who this man is, you will be able to do the same. If you do not know him beforehand, you will think that you do by the end of chapter two. His voice is one of comfort food, it warns the soul & brings you home.

Another wonderful aspect of Nawashi is that it is different from most “fetish fantasy” tales. It is not based on a man’s fantasy at all but on experiences that have lived in the mind of a great storyteller. Many of the antics of our hero just might also be based on life experiences. They just seem too “real” and lifelike to not have been tested before put to paper. This is a story of a man who is strong & knows who he is at the start. He opens himself up to exploration & a deeper understanding of where he is going but at least he has a foundation to stand on.

Is this a stroker book? For some maybe… Others, not. For me, it’s an affirmation that yes, people do have these feelings & many of them actually carry out their desires.

I really like the honesty that Graydancer puts into his character Brian & this is what makes it enjoyable. It’s a tale of desire, sex, kink & of course bondage told by a man who knows… His voice not only conveys what he wants his characters to convey to their audience but it conveys who the author is. A great man with a desire to bare his soul and a story to tell.

The reason he disgusts me is that for a number of years I have been looking for a reason to dislike Gray… this story just makes it all the more difficult.

I quickly devoured the first five chapters and am waiting in tingling anticipation for more. I’m not much of a fiction reader (listener), mainly because I’m very particular. Nawashi. What can I say about this story so far? I’m completely and utterly hooked. It contains two of my favourite topics…BDSM (specifically bondage…even more importantly…Japanese bondage) and magic. Sure, I have read my share of non-fiction books and articles about both…separately and together, but never have found any fiction that addresses the topics so well, so naturally, so believably. Usually when these topics intermingle in some of the fiction I have been sent or stumbled across, they are too far into the fantasy…it seems TOO mystical or TOO far outside of the realm of the believable. However, this story, I find myself not having to suspend my disbelief too far, if at all at times. THAT is the kind of fiction I enjoy. Unlike Lochai, I do not know Graydancer, save the name being mentioned to me by respected friends in the community who have attended workshops/panels presented by him, or a friend who recently met him (who believes we’d get along fabulously). I know of him, but don’t know him, but if Brian is any bit like him, I know if I ever met him, we’d probably talk for hours on end. The story (so far) is powerful, well written, and well presented. One complaint I have with many audio books is the reader. If it’s not a good voice, I just can’t continue…it completely ruins the story for me. However, Graydancer has a wonderful voice that sweeps you along on the journey. I cannot wait to see where this story will go and what will happen next. Truly fantastic so far.

Not being a part of the larger BDSM community and knowing little to nothing about rope art, I was a tad bit skeptical before I read this book. Would I be able to relate? Would I even understand any of the feelings and sensations that come in this community?

The sort answer to all of that and more is a definitive “Yes!”. Most important to me when I am reading erotica is how the characters are portrayed, especially the womyn. The strength that Graydancer gives the womyn in this story is on par with how I feel womyn should be in erotica. Submissive is not stupid nor is it weak and Graydancer’s story illustrates this beautifully. The “scenes” are hot to say the least and for the first time ever made me want to explore the world of a submissive.

There are some points when, even one who is a reader of fantasy, the story makes you take a step back. Not in horror or revulsion but in simple, “Holy shit did I get that right?” Then you realize you did and you smile at how Graydancer’s mind must work.

The book is involving and erotic in a way that traditional erotica wishes it could be. I highly recommend you purchase this book and await the sequel eagerly…
