The main character, "Black Shadow", is a total Mary Sue. He's the best at everything he does, a total bad ass, and a wise cracker, all powerful, never gets surprised type. The character seems very full of himself and is constantly comparing himself to Batman (and saying how much better or bad ass or frightening he is than Batman). He has these lines and quips that are better suited to a Spiderman type of hero than a dark-brooding-stick-to-the-shadows type of hero. You can't be the big-bad-boogy-man striking fear into the criminal underbelly AND crack jokes and be chummy-chummy with your police contacts. All of the characters are pretty shallow and stick to known cliches and archetypes. The author's reading is decent and the timber of his voice adds a nice gruff Wolverine-like quality to the character but some of the other actors are painful to listen to. Namely the female detective's acting.

Well, for those of you who didn't finish the book, you missed the great fight scene in the end, followed by the big reveal that was ripped straight from the scripts of The Empire Stikes Back and Return of The Jedi.

Overall the book started out great, but seemed to run out of steam. Pretty good sound quality though. If you want a good story, check out Scott Sigler's work!

Hello,

Great story so far, I'm on episode 11. I did notice an issue with episode 7. The intro music starts playing over top of the story.

Maybe you need to replace that file?

I didn't finish this one after 6 episodes... Just not my cup of tea, although Saylor's knowledge of Demonic Insights seems to be fairly knowledgeable...

Can you hear the sounds of faint praise condemning this book?

I didn't make it all the way through this one, though I did get past the halfway point. I would therefore give it an overall thumbs down, but suprisingly it is, initially at least, fairly compelling. Unfortunately after a half a dozen episodes it becomes hackneyed, labourious, and grated on my nerves with such severity it was impossible to continue.

It is without a doubt the most cliche'd piece of work I have ever encountered, (here anyway) and were it not for the adult content, I would deem it perfect for those young emerging minds that are far more forgiving. The stilted depiction is far to overbaring, and though the story itself is actually quite good, it is overshadowed by this rather severe shortcoming.

There were a few minor audio glitches, but generally the quality is quite good. It is an audio story production rather than a straight oratory, and I must say this is actually quite impressive. It is a bit of a shame that this has, in my opinion, been addressed more earnestly than the actual story.

I've asked Steve to put a note. I talked to him on twitter and the issue appears to be a problem with corrupted files.

I don't know why the last episode has not been put up on PB, but it has been on the authors web site since 5/5/08. Maybe we've been blown off. Bummer.

I'm not much into comic book stories, but this reminds me of the Marvel Comics movies that have come out in the last few years so I thought I'd take a chance on it.

So far I like the plot, even though the characters are a little genre cliche. Black shadow's background sounds a little similar to DareDevil, probably because that's the only real exposure I've had to the genre, that and the Batman movies.

The only thing I really have to get used to is the character voices. I haven't had someone "do the voices" to characters since I was little and it's worse I think since I've never listened to a podcast with comics as main "performers".
