The Secret World Chronicle, Book Two: The Hunt
Continuing The Secret World Chronicle by Mercedes Lackey and Steve Libbey, this is Book Two: The Hunt:
The Hunt portrays the frenzied aftermath of the devastating Thule Society attacks. Famed fantasy and sci-fi author Mercedes Lackey and newcomer Steve Libbey have joined forces to create a superhero-themed braided novel podcast series called The Secret World Chronicle. The series depicts an ensemble cast of metahuman characters coping with worldwide attacks by a mysterious, technologically advanced Nazi secret society, and the ensuing chaos. The Secret World is a meeting ground for pulpy adventure and thoughtful science fiction speculation, where ordinary people are elevated above their fellow humans and must grapple with the consequences of their newfound abilities.

Boy, you sure are slacking on getting any new episodes out…….

Looks like the delay in new episodes (I was starting to wonder too, Me), is well explained here:

Good so far, but there seems to be quite a bit of time between episodes. Would be nice if there were a recap, at the beginning of the each episode.

Hey, maybe they are just taking a bit more time to edit out those kissy sounds. Just messing with ya, great podcast!
March 1st, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Those kissy sounds are for you wonderful fans. Smooch! Actually, we’re wrapping up “book two” in order to collate the entire series thus far into a print edition to be shopped. This is exciting for us, but may result in a few more delays as we sync the stories together. The final version will be even more compelling, and we’ll keep posting extra bits here on Podiobooks.

This is really a fantastic series!
The characterization is some of the best I’ve seen in audio or print.
I do jones a bit between episodes, but each episode is wonderful, free, and I’m sure a lot of work. I don’t think one can can complain about anything that is free, especially something of this quality.
Thank you guys so much for all of your hard work!

I am really enjoying this series, but why so long between updates? The last episode was posted back in March. I really hope the series hasn’t been discontinued, but if it has I would like to know that I can stop checking for updates.
May 11th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Have no fear! We had to divert our attention to the print version in order to prepare it for publication, but we’ve got several episodes in the recording queue. The delay stems from the fact that several writers collaborate on the series, so there are times when schedules don’t match. Be patient with us and you’ll be rewarded!

I quit superheros back when spiderman donned blue and black for a season. The Secret World Chronicles (along with MLafferty’s Playing for Keeps) brought me back. I love this story. i live outside ATL so I keep wondering if I am going to bump into one of Tesla’s team. Still curious about these otherworld Nazis. The only character that is starting to bore me is Red Saviour jr. Enough with the one dimensional Marxist shtick – in fact she’s like a female Marxist spidey – always making pointed marxist aphorisms in the heat of battle. But then again, I am a libertarian capitalist.
Great stuff! Give us more!! (when you can…) -k

Found Secret World Chronicle by accident, and Stayed.
Loved Book One can’t wait to see where Book Two Leads.

Whatever the reason for such an astounding delay between episodes — and I’m sure it was a good one — would it kill the producers to put a verbal update on the feed? Such a thing would take no coordination between actors/voices, and would do much to put the speculation to rest.

Hi Sheryl:
I’m afraid our good reason for the delay precludes recorded messages. A wayward hurricane hit Veronica’s Florida estate, on which SWC is recorded. The carpet in the studio room was ruined. Sans carpet, we can’t record, because the bare concrete reflects the sound too much. We could record a horrible sounding message, but what’s the point? Folks know to check here.
Thanks for caring about us though! The manuscript is in Veronica’s hands, and when Veronica and her husband are able to repair their house, the final few chapters will be recorded.

Great stories! This is a truly interesting universe with well developed characters! Thanks for the the great listen!

Wonderful story, when everything gets back on track I’m sure it will have been worth the wait! Here’s looking forward to the rest of the Secret World story =D

by the by loved listening while returning from my Hurricane Gustav Evacuation from new orleans, i drove two days back by myself with this a few other good books accompaning me, thanks

Sorry to hear about Veronica’s problems from Gustav. Love her reading of the stories and will continue to patiently wait.
By the way. Red Savior? Oh my god. She can preach communism to me any time she wants. Attitude, brains and the descriptions of her beauty? Oh my.

Thrilled to see the book is back on track! Can’t wait to continue with this wonderful story! Yay!
February 6th, 2009 at 7:41 am
This is one of my favorite books available. I’m glad to see that you are able to post episodes again. Can’t wait to hear more!
February 8th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
Hello everyone! We’re back in the swing of things. The print version of SWC is being reviewed by potential publishers, which is one of the reasons we were so late with the new episodes. Also Veronica had to repair her space post Gustav plus had a baby girl, I went through a few health issues, etc. It has been eventful! We’re happy to be back on track, and grateful for the kind words.

Wow. Way to return with a splash. Great episode!

Huzzah! Hopefully the sequel to Bloodbaths isn’t far behind ^^
March 19th, 2009 at 5:04 am
Excellent series, keep up the good work!
May 4th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
Paul: While I’m working on the SWC books, I have put off the Bloodbaths for a bit. However, I am working on revising the series for submission to some of the big dogs! Keep your fingers crossed, and thank you for the kind words!
And everyone else, thank you! We’re happy to be back in the swing of writing and recording, and even happier to do it knowing that the series has found a home.

OMG! I’ve been waiting for this to start back for a long time! Glad to see patience has won out…resubscribing and relistening right now!

The book is good, and the narrator is great. Many well written books seem to suffer from less then ideal narration. This one does not, Veronica Giguere does an outstanding job.
My only problem is that Evo Terra and implicitly J.C. Hutchins tries, and largely succeeds at ruining the experience, but I guess that is true for most books on podiobooks.
[Evo notes: Ding's passive-aggressive ending comment is in regards to a current inserted audio ad on the episodes of this and all other books currently on the site. From time to time, we do run ads on the free content we provide. We may run more in the future, as we try and find ways to support and promote our authors, their careers and our service.]

I was just about to cancel my subscription.Nearly fainted when I saw 2 new files in my podcatcher. Thanks. Hope the episodes are more regular now.

I hear you Dee, the updates have been frustratingly slow, to the point where I’ve never been sure if the book had been dropped or not. It’s good, but it would be nice if, at the very least, the blog on the website would give us some idea WHY several months tend to pass before each short update.
The first time I know of was explained and understandable, floods, destroyed/damaged equipment, and a hospital visit. But since then things are still ridiculously slow. Here’s hoping this is a sign it’s back on track for good.
October 16th, 2009 at 8:31 am
I just spotted the two new episodes, the wait between them is almost painful, however when they finally arrive they are worth the wait.
I’m trying not to be inpatient as this is such a good and well told story and I know both Steve Libbey and Veronica Giguere have suffered real life setbacks during this work which has thrown the time scale off.
Here’s to hoping they can get it back on track and start to get the episodes out more frequently.

I am hooked on these audio books! I just read on The Secret World Chronicle website that Baen will publish the books, which is awesome! Great publisher. Definitely going to buy them when they’re in print!
Speaking of Baen, Mercedes Lackey has a bunch of free e-books posted on the Baen free library: http://www.baen.com/library/

Just wondering the Podiobooks site says “In Progress” but the author web site says The thrilling finale of the Secret World Chronicle, Book Two! is available now. Episode # 23 & 24 not showing in Podiobooks?
January 21st, 2010 at 6:30 am
The book is now complete! Sorry about the delay, but it’s fixed. And we’ll be getting Book Three very soon!
January 21st, 2010 at 6:38 pm
I’m still really happy I stuck with this and that it’s finally done.
I do hope the next one doesn’t get so plagued with delays and I look forward to getting it in print.
January 21st, 2010 at 7:55 pm
Wow I dropped this book months ago since it was so long since the last update. Glad it finally finished. I hope that if there is a book three that it updates much faster than book two did.
Thanks for getting the last two episodes out there though, future listeners will appreciate it.
October 14th, 2010 at 10:01 pm
I am so glad this one is finished! I have been checking back off and on because these stories are just amazing. I’m about halfway done with this one and am eager to return to the Echo world. Can’t wait to finish and get started on the third. I love the way the stories meld to create a whole. I can remember quite fondly the first book I ever read by Mercedes Lackey and happened upon The Bloodbaths before I found book one. Needless to say, the whole experience has been a treat for me.

The story is great, the reading is great — the editing was a bit lax. Starting about Episode 20, used those clicks to mark spots that needed to be edited, then whoever was supposed to didn’t go edit those spots. It’s a bit disappointing, since otherwise the book is excellent, and I’m looking forward to the next book.
