And we’re up! Don’t Blink!
Well…after a very long weekend, we are up and running on the new server. This one gives a new meaning to ‘arduous,’ and if we have to move again, I may have to take hemlock.
You may have noticed a bit of up and down. Here is what happened.
- Sat. and Sun: Ray and I got the box configured and ready to go. Everything was hunky-dorry for a Monday morning launch.
- Mon morning: We went to flip the switch on the DNS servers, only to discover that the request we put in two weeks ago to transfer the domain to GoDaddy was never approved by our old registrar. Evo spent the morning on the phone running that one down. Finally, everything transferred. With a big helping hand from Clair High, we got the DNS updated and we were up and running.
- Mon Afternoon: I had requested that the hosting company (which rocks, btw) install cPanel on the server to let non-sysadmin types like myself control the box. Unfortunately, cPanel installed new versions of the web and database servers, overwriting our old ones. That’s why, last night, you saw a cPanel page here. I got on the horn with Clair and the hosting company, and we got the ball rolling. Clair is our new sysadmin, along with Ray. Say hi if you get a chance.
- Tues morning: In the wee hours, the hosting company got our old site back up and running. All the data was intact, it turned out ( I had backups, but hey…gift horse, etc) . I changed the config files, fired up apache2, and we’re back up and running.
So far, so good. Our podiobooks emails are still down, but I’ll work on that at lunch today. If you have any problems, I will have the feedback [at] podiobooks [dot] com address up even sooner.
Thanks for all the well-wishing and patience.

All I know, is that for the past couple weeks (was it a couple weeks?), I have been checking the site to see what the progress has been. This morning, with what I can only describe as grim resignation, I clicked on my Podiobooks bookmark. !.5 seconds later, the site was in my browser and functioning correctly.
I cannot describe the relief I feel in seeing this site back up and running. For those of us who use but do not donate, this was a lesson in how you don’t know what you have until it is gone.
Thank you all for your hard work in bringing Podiobooks back to life.

Okay, you did say don’t blink. I spoke too soon, but this is real progress, and I think I can see light at the end of this tunnel.

I’m glad you guys got set up on a new server. The site is looking good, (did the background color change slightly?) and it’s good to see it up and running. Thank you for all the hard work and hair pulling you did so we could get our audio fixes!! You guys rule ^_^

It’s a little uncanny to see the pages reacting so fast, but this is looking very good, even good enough to be worth your trouble. Thanks very much!

One problem, I don’t know where to talk about this. A couple months ago, I chose to “release all episodes” for at least one of my podiobooks (The Immortals), and I was able to download them all in my podcatcher. But yesterday, I tried doing the same for Half Share, after my podcatcher hadn’t yet given me my next episode. It didn’t, and still doesn’t, register any episodes except Episode 1. I tried unsubscribing and resubscribing in my podcatcher to no avail. I wonder if there is some technical difficulty with the site?

No problems at all. Are you sure that your podcatcher is set to retrieve all the episodes? That’s usually the issue, as the default behavior is to only grab the most recent episode.
Drop your custom feed into a browser and see if all episodes are there. If not, send an email to feedback@podiobooks.com and give us your user name. We’ll take a peek.
