Help for Authors: PBPro

Podiobooks.com was, and remains to this day, committed to the DIY attitude from the beginning. We saw first hand the level of quality possible with some relatively inexpensive equipment and non-paid vocal talent, often from the author him/herself. We not only knew it was possible for nearly anyone to record, edit and produce their very own podiobook, but we were (and still are) happy to give advice and assistance along the way.

But the hard and fast reality is that some authors, for a variety of reasons, do not have the wherewithal to follow that same DIY path blazed so many moons ago. For many, it's simply an issue of not having enough time in the day. Some are frustrated by the complexity of the "serializing" process, while others have "written themselves into a corner" and are simply unable to adequately convey their written word in spoken form.

For all of those people and more, we are happy to announce PBPro, an ala carte menu of services designed to get your written word, recorded narration or audio book into podiobook-ready form. Use some of these, all of these, or none of these. Our commitment to hosting free serialized audio books remains the same as it ever was. (Same as it ever was... same as it ever was.)

NOTE: You do not have to do any of the options below to get your book on Podiobooks.com. In fact, we prefer it if you did it yourself. But if, for whatever reason, you can't... read on.

Professional Narration Services - $27.00 per 1,000 words

You're staring at a stack of pages of your masterpiece. Your baby. It is, in every sense of the word, perfect. But your protagonist is a young lass from Victorian England, and you're a 52 year old longshoreman from Queens. Yeah, we get the picture.

We have a slew of professional podcasters, each with hundreds of hours of on-mic experience ready to take your words on paper and make them sing in audio form. When finished, you'll have a 100% stumble-free audio version of your book in high-quality audio form. Most of our talent can handle multiple voices, but if you need more than one narrator, we'll have to figure out a new price point.

Listen to some of our narrators' samples.

Editing and Sweetening - $150 per studio hour

Maybe your best friend has the perfect voice and still has his old microphone from when he was going to be the next Johnny Cash. Or Madonna. Work with me here. Trouble is, he stutters like Mel Tillis, or can't get through three sentences with out stumbling over his words. You've got the entire book recorded, but it needs serious editing. We can do that.

Or maybe you managed to work Audacity or Garage Band into giving you a "clean" recording of your book, but it really needs some transition music to separate your scene changes. Or maybe you just need all of your computer voices to sound... computerized. Pay our experienced audio engineers for their time, and they'll kick you back out files that will let your brilliance shine through.

Serializing - $50 per episode

The last step in the process is turning your perfect audio book (either one you already have or one we helped to make from the process above) into a serialized version, ready to go on Podiobooks.com. That means adding the obligatory but custom intros and outros (complete with bed music), compressing down to the correct format, adding ID3 tags and artwork and even file naming. It's the last thing to do before your episodes go live, and it causes some folks a massive headache.

Relax. Our peeps can handle the pressure. Together, we'll come up with the perfect "formula" for your serialization and make sure all the vowels are dotted and the consonants crossed. We'll even take care of the uploading process if you like.

Artwork - Varies

You know that old saying "you can't judge a book by its cover"? It's wrong. People do it all the time and a high-quality and professionally designed book cover can bring in more listeners. It's that simple. We've found someone who does some incredible work at ridiculously low prices. We are happy to get you in touch with her. You'll be happy with not only the price, but how she can take your vision and turn it into something amazing.

Caveats

These are, we think you will agree, very low prices for everything. We're doing this as a service to the independent Podiobooks.com authors. What we aren't interested in doing is providing our services at below-market rates for publishing companies who stand to profit on our good nature later on. All prices on this page, as well as those negotiated outside, assume that the final work will only be used on Podiobooks.com or by the author in their own independent distribution efforts. If a big house buys your book and wants to sell it far and wide, great. But the talented folks who did lots of work for you at below-market value pricing need to be fairly compensated. Not by you, but probably the publisher. We can cross that bridge when we come to it.
